PYP Learning Journey - My reflections

The workshop is helping me evolve as a PYP practitioner. It is giving me a clear insight of PYP principles and practices. I am now confident about promoting and developing language in my classroom and have clearly understood the benefits of learning languages in children.

We have been promoting International Mindedness in our classroom through stories and other learning engagements. The reading done through this workshop has helped me develop deeper understanding about Learner Profile attributes and International mindedness.

This workshop encourages us to take ownership of our learning. The reading and collaboration has helped me develop self-efficacy. I am exercising voice and choice by reading the view of other participants and sharing my perspective. The workshop also offers us choice in terms of assignments and the medium of presentation.

Developing International Mindedness

We use these learning engagements in class to develop international mindedness
  • Promoting a positive learning environment in our classroom where children respect all members.
  • Student Voice – Creating opportunities for student voice - sharing of views and ideas and understanding perspective of others through learning engagements and during circle time discussions. Give children an opportunity to be responsible for their own learning and to lead.
  • Read aloud sessions by teachers, students and parents .Stories such as Same same but different, Sandwich swap  help in understanding different cultures and develop tolerance. Through these stories children will develop self-respect and respect for others.
  • Promoting love for their country and respect for other countries. This can be achieved when children share stories or discuss about their country, culture, tradition, beliefs. Children will learn to respect other and be tolerant towards others  as well.
  • Highlighting global commonalities and reflect on the life other people in different parts of the people. This will help children realize the privileges that a few are bestowed with. Children will develop empathy towards other. Having a buddy log – a students area where children can meet each other to build friendship and resolve conflicts through a dialogue.
  • Connecting to the host country we are living in and discussing the values it stands for such as unity, tolerance and respect.
  • Encouraging children to participate in awareness campaigns such as the beach clean-up, no- plastic, Environment Day etc. related to SDG Global goals to highlight awareness about the issues faced globally. This will encourage students to think and ideate. They will come with solutions to solve real world problems.

Learning of Language to encompass being International Mindedness

  •  Language promotes development of all learner profile attribute.
  •  Through language children communicate share their perspectives and understand other’s perspectives.
  • Language development is about building vocabulary, reading text and comprehending.
  • Language helps children to compare points of view, show empathy, compassion and respect
Language development is part of every subject. To reap the cognitive and other benefits of language, teachers must plan meaningful learning engagements with a focus on language development.
